(More customer reviews)My son received this from his grandfather a few days ago, and it has been a lot of fun for him but a bit too hard for him to control, especially given the trim problems I describe below.
We have flown it for ~30-45 minutes total (about 8 charge cycles).
It has just enough power when fully charged to gain altitude. After 1-2 minutes of flying it can only gain altitude for the first few seconds and then descends to the floor. All RC helicopters fly better near the floor since they get a "push" from the air hitting the floor.
This particular unit has a severe problem with the rotary "trim", the adjustment that tweaks the counter-rotation so that the helicopter doesn't spin around in a circle. The remote has a knob to adjust the trim and the knob works quite well, however as the battery charge changes (presumably, because I can't think of another reason why the trim would dynamically change once set) .... which is a continuous thing .... the helicopter must be re-trimmed. So basically, you find yourself continuously re-trimming the unit instead of flying it where you want to go.
If your unit came with AA batteries, they are very cheap. Throw them out or use them in something else. Purchase some good quality AA batteries (I bought some energizer 30% 'more' power ones for electronic toys). This made the unit work WAY WAY better. With the original batteries the controller signal kept not being fully recognized by the helicopter and there was no way to adjust the throttle, it was either full throttle or nothing. With good quality AA batteries installed the remote is much more responsive in terms of control.
As with most of these, you can't fly it in ANY wind. Hence, indoors is a good option. We have flown it around the house for ~25 minutes and not broken anything yet, although I'm pretty careful to cut power the instant the rotors hit anything, and instructed my son to do the same. A friend of mine has a $120 RC helicopter and has broken it at least once by accidently letting the rotors hit something. This unit is so lightweight that I can't really see breaking anything except the helicopter itself.
Basically this toy is slightly better than bottom of the line because it does have a forward+turn control as well as vertical throttle (really cheap ones just have the vertical throttle). However because of the problems maintaining a constant trim setting, the forward+turn control is fairly useless (it would be very good if the trim would stay fixed). I'd say overall this toy is about good enough to let you decide whether you want to invest in a $100+ RC copter from a solid company or that this really isn't your thing.
