Lindberg has a history of producing unusual model kits that most other scale model companies don't produce, such as tug boats, freighters, cartoon cars, early model aircraft, and battle-damaged combat jets. They also have a reputation of being somewhat behind the technology curve in their manufacturing process. However, this kit is surprisingly well made and well molded, indicating that the company has their act together and is turning out some quality stuff.
The rivets are accurately sized (sometimes a maker will over-size the rivets and panel lines, particularly on older kits) and the vents and screens are well detailed. There was very little excess flash (during manufacturing, sometimes plastic will seep out between the molds and leave a glob of plastic on the seam) with only two places that will require attention: there are two injection "circles" on the rotor blades that can will need to be sanded down (Lindberg thought ahead and designed them to be on the underside of the blades where they'll be hidden from view)and a little around the pilot's seat, which is easily whittled away. There is a hairline of flash around the skids, but this is minor and, if you build a diorama, will most likely be hidden by grass and dirt.
The art that's in the reference picture on this website is not accurate to what's in the box. The photo shows a two-tone paint scheme with low-vis markings. What's in the box is much better for an early-war gunship, painted all-over Flat Olive Drab with the no-glare black panel on the nose. The kit has markings for only one aircraft - a Marine gunship armed with four 20mm guns circa 1963-1965 - and the decals are crisp and full-colored. This should take "weathering" well, if you choose to try your hand at adding grease, wear-and-tear, paint fading, and such.
The dashboard consol is raised-line and invites dry-brushing and, for those who have #000 brushes, panel detailing. Other than that, there isn't much to the interior so you'll have to scratch-build your own seatbelts and mic cables. The kit comes with two pilot figures molded in a standard "seated with arms in lap" pose, but aftermarket figures are available and will be a good upgrade.
If you're looking for a good candidate for a kit-bash, or to experiment with new detailing tricks, this is the model to try it on. It's certainly cheaper than experimenting on a Hasagawa or Fujimi kit.
As with most scale model kits, this isn't a toy that's meant to be taken into the yard and tossed around. It is a static model intended to be a display piece of the builder's skill. With some patience and skill, you can turn out a pretty good little piece of work.
