this was very cool while it lasted. first if you are going to get the aluminimum tail make sure you have the aluminum body or you will break the small carbon fiber pieces that attaches to the tail shaft....the aluminum body allows some of the shft to slide in making that not possible...
as for the assembly as a whole poor if your not a very good flyer as the carbon fiber fin will shatter with a semi hard crash so if your still prone to crashing wait to upgrade the tail section as it is the most vulnerable

Most model helicopters are a single crash away from major repair costs or are so slow (coax) that they don't move enough to be damaged. The MSR breaks that rule. It's a speedy ultra micro heli that takes a beating & keeps the rotor spinning.
Unlike most model helicopters of it's size, the MSR (Micro Single Rotor) has a single main rotor blade, & a tail rotor to counteract torque. This means it can be much faster than the typical coax in this size. But, from some innovative offsets of the flybar & a tilted main shaft, it's nearly as stable as a coax to make it forgiving to beginners.

Once that's done, it's near impossible to replace the cap, so you'll need a new Tail Boom Assembly w/Tail Motor/Rotor/Mount: BMSR. Another common part are the Main Blade Grips with/Hardware: BMSR.
Did I mention fast? Yes the MSR is much faster than any coax helicopter out of the box. But E-flite also added a turbo feature. Just switch the ball links on the swashplate to the outer ones & the controls become that much faster. This lets you get even more speed out of the MSR & is a welcome addition for those calm days, when you can take the MSR outdoors. That's right you can fly outside with the MSR... just make sure the wind is no more than about 5 mph.

E-flite markets the mSR as the "next step ultra-micro heli for coaxial pilots" (taken from the mSR's box). While this is true in most ways, if you are new to this hobby or have only flown Syma s107s, AirHogs, etc. you should read on because as good as the mSR is, and it is great, there's some information you should have before investing the time and money necessary to make this bird fun. For reference I had very little experience with helicopters beyond 3ch/gyro helis like the syma s107.
First, I should clear up the concept of indoor. This heli is indoor in the sense that it can't fly well in any sort of wind. Sure, proficient pilots can fly it outside, and people modify the mSR for outdoor flight but if your proficient/modder you're not reading this review. The mSR isn't much bigger than a syma s107 and weighs about the same amount. But unlike any coaxial heli the mSR is INSANELY FAST. You almost can't appreciate how fast this thing is until you experience it. People routinely fly helis like this in gyms because you need that much room to really take advantage of the heli's capabilities. After the first few weeks of frustrating crashes I really thought I had made a mistake and was wishing I had bought the mCX2 instead. And if you are a prospective buyer you should take a minute to consider this alternate possibility. The mCX2 is much faster than a Syma 107, is four channel, etc. and it is controllable for a novice. If you aren't going to progress to the money pit known as collective pitch helicopters, or CP, this is likely what you want. This bears repeating. The mSR is incredibly fast and capable. Sure you can slow it down to the point that it can buzz around from room to room but if that's your goal, why suffer through the learning process of a single rotor heli?
This doesn't mean the mSR is totally unsuited for indoor flying. On the contrary, if you are a very good pilot and you have a programmable radio, you can tame the mSR down to the point that it is very fun to fly indoors while retaining the capability to fly like a bat out of hell when you happen upon a place with enough room to let loose. Maybe that's the value proposition of the mSR? It will take you from beginner to experienced pilot all with the same heli and a big bag of spare parts.
But what if you are just a novice with the radio that came with the RTF kit? Well, I hate to be the bearer of bad news but the radio that comes with the kit is pretty limited. It only adds $20 to the price over the BNF so this shouldn't come as a total surprise. With a programmable radio like the Spektrum DX6i, as a beginner the mSR is much easier to learn how to fly. As an experienced pilot, the DX6i allows you to really tap the mSR's potential. A programmable radio like the DX6i allows you to slow down the mSR's flying to almost that of a coaxial and you can gradually bring up the speed as your ability develops. It allows for things like mixing and dual rates, exponential, etc. If all of these things are foreign to you, don't worry. They are not as complex as they sound. And to fly the mSR well you will eventually learn them. There's a lot of help available online, from horizon hobby, etc. Again, if all of this is unappealing consider the mCX2 who's included radio is totally suited that heli's capabilities.
I don't want to totally dissuade you from buying the mSR without a programmable radio, especially if you might invest in one down the road. Just know it is going to be frustrating and to give yourself some time to learn how to fly, it isn't easy for anybody their first time.
So now you have the mSR and a programmable radio (or not). What next? There's a help guide in pdf available from rchelicopterfun dot com for $8. You can find everything in its 77 pages by combing tens of thousands of pages of rc helicopter forums or you can make the best $8 investment in your new hobby. I have no affiliation with the site, its operator etc. I just found his guide extremely helpful. It saved me countless hours and dollars in setup and repairs. For instance, before I knew what any of the radio settings did, I just copied his easy to follow settings and went from there. It was a good basic setup for a beginner.
Tips for Beginners.
1. buy some spare parts. Specifically landing gear, tail rotors, fly bars.
2. buy a few e-flite 150mAH batteries. the included charger can charge 4 batteries. If you have 4 batteries you will always have one ready to go. it makes learning go faster if you don't have to wait for batteries to charge.
3. the 150mAH batteries come with some shrink wrap. Don't throw this away! it goes around the battery to correctly position it for center-of-gravity.
4. trimming the heli is the first thing you have to do. if it isn't trimmed you can't fly it for more than a few seconds without crashing. Unfortunately, trimming requires good technique which as a beginner you don't have. Watch some of the videos on the blade website. One in particular shows the following: spin up the rotor slowly. You'll notice the heli start to skid to the left-- this is normal. As it skids, don't lift off, pay attention to see if the nose swings left of right or stays straight. If the nose moves, trim it out, retest. Get the nose trimmed before you even take off.
5. Taking off and crashing left. As noted above the heli will skid left on take off, this is normal. if fact it will always behave cooky when it is very close to the ground because of the interaction of prop wash and the ground. I wish someone told me this simple thing when I was learning. When you take off you have to give a little right cyclic to counteract the left skid. Also, you should spin up slowly to reduce wear on the system but once you are up to speed don't be afraid to pull it off the ground with a smooth advancement of the stick. this will minimize the amount of right stick you need to counteract the ground effect.
6. More on trimming. I've read some people's heli was trimmed out of the box. They turned it on, took off and it hovered hands off from the start. Mine didn't. Not even close. I had maxed out the trim adjustment on mine and it still would drift backwards and left. If this is happening to you, to may need to adjust the ball link arms. A little bit at a time. I wasn't sure what controlled what so I just moved the stick and looked at the heli's head. I saw which arm moved when I pulled back on the stick. I popped it off and twisted to the linkage two turns to lengthen the arm. I then popped it back on tested. I wound up having to to lengthen it by three turns and now it flies perfect. if you can get an experienced pilot or a local hobby shop to help, that is preferred. Just know, barring some huge defect, if your bird doesn't fly right it is only a matter of adjustment. if you can't figure it out, find someone who can help.

I've flown model airplanes all my life but other than the Air Hogs 2 channel helis I've not messed with helicopters much. The main reason being that larger ones are money pits for the novice flyer. Every crash is a guaranteed $30 or more down the drain and crashes are going to happen on a regular basis for most people.
I had a couple Air Hog Havoc's last year and loved the little helis. They were entertaining to fly and practically indestructible. Recently a friend let me fly his Blade MCX2 and I was amazed at how far the micro heli's have come in a year. So, just to get my feet wet in the micro helis again, I bought a $29 Syma S107 just to get back into the hobby. The S107 was a lot better than the Air Hogs Havoc and I was amazed how stable and sturdy it was. I also bought a Blade MCX2 and a Blade MSR. The Blade helis arrived last night after sending a S107 back because one of the S107 motors stopped working after about 30 flights. I flew the MCX2 and MSR helis until after 2am this morning. I couldn't quit playing with them. What a blast. The following is a review of all my recent equipment so anyone looking for something faster or slower than the MCX2 will have references to check out.
The Syma S107...
This is a really great heli for only $36 shipped!! You just can't beat the price and the S107 is built like a tank so you can't hardly break it. Compared to the Blade helis, the S107 looks and feels like a tank. It has a metal frame and landing gear believe it or not. Well, even so, I managed to break it somehow. One of the rotor motors stopped working after about 30 flights. I think that was a fluke though because the S107 got hundreds of 4 and 5 star ratings. It was very easy and fun to fly while it lasted though and I highly recommend it if you are looking for a very low cost micro heli.
A few things to note about the S107 relative to the Blade helis though..
The S107 battery is not removable and takes 50 minutes to recharge. That means you fly for 5 minutes then its at least 50 minutes before you are in the air again. That's a huge drawback if you want to "play" for an hour or two straight. Also, the S107 has no side to side control but that's not a big deal because you have rudder (yaw) control that lets you point it where you want it to go then apply forward elevator. It is controlled by infrared which means you can't fly it in sunlight and if something comes between you and the heli you loose control (like a TV remote). The Blade helis are radio controlled and can be flown outside and at much longer range.
The MCX2...
It takes a few minutes to get the feel for which fingers need to do what to control the MCX2 but this heli is so stable its really not hard to get to the point of flying around the room and having a lot of fun in no time (just one or two flights). If you get confused and the heli gets out of control just take your hands off the controls and it will stabilize. The MCX2 is the perfect indoor flyer. It will go fast enough to make it a challenge but its slow and stable enough that you aren't always bouncing it off the walls indoors. By the way, bouncing off walls and furniture doesn't seem to damage the heli or the things it hits. I tend to fly beyond my abilities so I probaly crash it at least 5x per charge and nothing has been damaged yet. The only thing you have to remember is to turn the throttle to the lowest setting BEFORE the blades hit something. That will reduce your chances of damaging anything. With the rates set to low (it has a dual rate controller or you can use any DSM2 controller) you can make precise landings on objects smaller than a piece of paper with ease. You can do it on high rates but its not as easy. I spent 95% of my time last night flying the MCX2 and about 5% flying the MSR. I flew for about 4 hours continuous, switching batteries in and out of a 4 port charger as soon as one ran out.
After about 15 flights I moved the flybar control arms to the longer pins. This gives more control movement and makes the MCX2 faster and more responsive in pitch and roll. I couldn't tell a huge difference but it was noticeably faster and more challenging.
One negative about the MCX2 package is that it only comes with one flight battery and the charger is only a single port charger that runs on batteries. The charger can be powered by an AC adapter but the adapter must be purchased separately.
The MSR...
One reason I also bought the MSR was to get the extra batteries and the 4 port charger (the charger retails for around $40). At least that's my excuse to justify buying two toys. The MSR package gives more bang for the buck if you are a semi-experienced flier. With 3 flight batteries you can fly almost continuously and never have to wait for a battery to finish charging which is the only way to go in my opinion. 4 batteries is optimum.
The MSR feels totally different. Control of the MSR is not as intuitive as the MCX2. I found myself flying it into the wall and not knowing for sure what I had done wrong. Don't get me wrong, its not really hard to fly but it just requires you to know the controls well enough to not have to think much before you make a move. Its also much faster on high rates which gives you much less time to respond. I think that once my fingers get "programmed" to control the MCX2 without thinking then the MSR will become my main choice to fly. The MSR is a LOT faster than the MCX2 so using low rates indoors is a good idea. If you have programmable rates and you are a novice flyer then you might want to drop them down to 30% or so on low rate. Exponential settings also help.
The Spektrum DX7...
I bought a Spektrum DX7 radio so I can use a single radio with my planes and helis. I hear that the radio that comes with the RTF MCX2 and MSR is decent but I also read that the Spektrum radio will give much finer resolution so you have better control of the aircraft. I didn't like having to move the throttle back and forth on the S107 to keep it at one altitude while hovering. Using the Spektrum DX7 (the $60 DX5 would probably do the same) I don't have to move the throttle back and forth to keep the heli in one spot while hovering. Not to mention, the adjustable dual rates and exponential functions available which make the fine tuning even better.
In a nutshell, the DX7 (or the DX6i) lets you fine tune the throttle, elevator, aileron and rudder settings so the heli is much easier to control. With the flick of a switch you can move from low rates and exponential settings that make the heli very slow and controllable to full out settings that make it fast and challenging. You can even create settings using negative exponential that will cause the heli to feel unstable so you can start practicing for that full collective pitch bird you've been eying. There are many many more adjustments and mixes available on the DX7 that can be used for all types of airplanes and helis. Dual rates and exponential settings are the main ones needed to make flying the micro helis more enjoyable.

I bought this antenna to give a shoot to fix the broken TX antenna for Exceed RC 2.4GHZ TX radio, realizing that this antenna might not be compatible with my TX radio. After semi-micro surgical and tricky soldering/gluing, it turned out the replaced antenna works great: good range for signal. I highly recommend this antenna as a good replacement to fix 2.4Ghz TX radio antenna yourself.

This is an exact replacement of the stock part. If you over-tighten the screws they will strip. Tighten the rotor blade screws just enough to secure the rotor blade but loose enough to allow the blade to flop back and forth when you tilt the copter. I've been running this replacement part for about 50 flights at 6 minutes each with no problems.

The battery holder for this particular carbon fiber landing gear (mSR) is too small. I didn't even get a chance put it on the heli before it broke. Once you get it through the first set of bars it butts up against the second set, and wont allow you to push it any further. Without the battery pushed all the way in the center of gravity is off, and the battery would come out easy on a hard landing. I'm bummed, Ive wanted this part for a while but wasn't even able to get it in the air before it broke. I tried to glue it back but it didn't help. No matter what, it is too small to fit an E-Flight battery, the two you get with the heli. I have 5 but none worked. I sent Hobby Zone an email telling them what happened.
I tried to buy a standard holder from my local hobby store but it doesn't work, the way it connects to the landing gear is different.
This video didn't come out very good. I guess my camera doesnt like to shoot something close to the lense even though it was shot in 720p. Will update when i hear from them.
Update: Well i glued the battery holder on to where it would have worked. But this thing is so fragile. The tiny screw that holds one side of the battery holder to the rest of the landing gear has stripped out, so I guess ill glue that too. I also have 1 of the skids cracked, so now 1/3 of one side of the landing gear is just hanging on by threads. I haven't crashed at all, hard or soft. Its only been in the air 15-20 mins and its basically junk at this point.
Tried contacting "Hobby Zone" multiple times now. Never can get in touch with them during their business hours. I have sent several emails to them and have got 1 returned email simply saying call this 888 number, so thats no help since they are either never there or don't pick up.
My suggestion: Don't waste your money, but if you just have to have it, get it from someone other than Hobby Zone. I don't see this being changed again at least until I get back from an overseas trip that will last 4 months. Wish I didn't buy this thing. And wish I had more time before i leave to mess with this thing.

So, I ordered this a while back because I had an mcx and msr, and I wanted an inbetween for inside the house.
This has fast forward flight, a super-stable hover, and the little l.e.d.s they added are a nice touch. It's definitely something a beginner can fly, even younger children with a little supervision to start.
I compared the parts/frame of the mcx2 to the mcx and they look pretty much identical, the servo arms have a little "C" in the middle of them, I think that might give them a little more durability, other than that I couldn't really see anything else. (mcx2 5in1 has led plug) That being said the mcx2 feels like it's maintained it's hover "integrity", if you will, through more crashes. Have yet to really smash this, but I've bounced it off a few walls and whatnot, and nothing has broken.
I have noticed the flybar can pop off at impact, I'm not sure if this was done on purpose since the attached flybar would occasionally bust on the original mcx.
The mcx2 is a little faster in forward flight than the mcx1 if you switch the servos to the longer balls on the swashplate, also there's an optional (sold seperately) tail with weight sold for the mcx2 that can replace the current tail that makes it a little more maneuverable.
Other than that, it looks a little sharper than the mcx1, it's got a little white on the blades, the canopy is a little nicer (and clear), it's got the flashing l.e.d.s for flying in the dark. It comes with the same 1 pack charger as my mcx1 came with, with a slight update, this one has the option to hook it up with a wall charger (sold seperately) vs the mcx1's single cell charger was battery-only.Overall, great first heli, lots of fun to fly, anyone can fly it, if you don't have an mcx1 yet, definitely get this one instead! If you've got an mcx1... eh, it's fun but not really worth the upgrade cost. (if you have an mcx1 just get a cusker mod and it'll pretty much fly like the mcx2)

Just got my first of the new 150mAh Eflite batteries. Initial impression is great! Seem to be getting at least 3-4 times the flight times of the old standard batteries (altho some of them may not be at their full capacity anymore)running in the MCX Blade/S300. Will also be using in the Vapor and Micro P51 Mustang planes. Connector is solid, and altho the battery is longer, it still fits great in the helis and planes and the slightly added weight does not seem to bother the COG, may be even better for my flight feel. Fits great in the standard AA chargers as well (might take a bit longer to charge, but worth it). Love it so far! Will have to order more...
